The Open University, UK (Coordinator)

The Open University (OU) is the UK's largest university, with more than 200,000 students per year. Since its establishment by Royal Charter in 1969, it has opened the door to higher education for more than 2 million people. It represents 22% of all part-time higher education students in the UK and is ranked amongst the top UK universities for the quality of its teaching. It is also one of the UK's leading research institutions, and has been involved in 67 successful European projects over the last 5 years. The OU hosts, with the University of Edinburgh, Innogen: the ESRC Centre for Social and Economic Research on Innovation in Genomics. Formed in 2002, Innogen is part of the ESRC Genomics Network studying the evolution of genomics and life sciences and their far-reaching social and economic implications. The coordinator of FINNOV, Prof Mariana Mazzucato, is a core member of Innogen and the Open University's inter-faculty Centre for Innovation, Knowledge and Development (IKD) which brings together researchers from the business school and the faculties of technology and social sciences to research the dynamics between technology creation and diffusion, business behavior, government and non-governmental actors. A primary focus of IKD is on exploring ways that knowledge and innovation can contribute to inclusive and sustainable patterns of development. IKD's strength comes from its diversity and its ability to cross traditional discipline boundaries. IKD researchers have a large amount of publications and external grants in the following areas: Governance and conflict; education; migration and diaspora; health; medical and agricultural biotechnology; technology and industry dynamics; capabilities and capacity development; public-private partnerships; regulatory frameworks; social justice, complexity and; enterprise development and entrepreneurship. IKD is a core member of the EC Network of Excellence Dynamics of Institutions and Markets in Europe (DIME).
